Bafang BBS02 Review

Bafang BBS02 Review

The Bafang BBS02 is a mid-drive electric bicycle conversion kit that has been gaining popularity among e-bike enthusiasts and commuters alike. It is designed to provide an affordable, yet powerful and reliable e-bike solution for those who want to convert their conventional bikes into electric ones.

One of the standout features of the BBS02 is its 750W motor, which is capable of providing ample power and torque to tackle steep hills and tough terrain. This makes the BBS02 an ideal choice for those who want to use their e-bikes for off-road adventures or commuting through hilly areas.

Another key benefit of the Bafang BBS02 is its compatibility with a wide range of bike frame types and sizes. This versatility makes it easy to install the kit onBafang BBS02 almost any bike, giving users the ability to convert their existing bikes into e-bikes without having to purchase an entirely new bike.

In terms of performance, the BBS02 delivers a smooth and responsive ride, thanks to its precise motor control and intuitive throttle and pedal assist system. This allows riders to customize the level of assistance they receive from the motor, depending on their riding needs. Additionally, the kit comes with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery, which provides ample range for most e-bike riders.

As far as durability, the Bafang BBS02 is built to last, with high-quality components and a sturdy design that is capable of handling tough conditions. The kit is also easy to maintain, with readily available replacement parts and a straightforward design that makes it simple to diagnose and fix any issues that may arise.

One potential drawback of the BBS02 is its weight, which is significantly heavier than some other e-bike conversion kits. This can affect the handling of the bike and make it more difficult to maneuver, especially for riders who are not used to the added weight.

Overall, the Bafang BBS02 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a powerful and reliable e-bike conversion kit. Its powerful motor, intuitive controls, and compatibility with a wide range of bikes make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to convert their existing bike into an electric one. Its durability and ease of maintenance are also significant benefits that make the BBS02 a great choice for e-bike riders of all skill levels.

What exactly does the kit consist of?

The Bafang mid-drive motor kits come in a variety of different versions, and each one includes all of the components necessary to transform your regular bike into an electric bike. The only additional component that you will need is an appropriate battery. There are even some vendors who offer the Bafang BBS02 kits complete with a battery and sold as a single unit. If you go with one of these kits, you will have everything at your disposal to perform the conversion on your own. At the end of this review, you will find a list of some of the retailers that come highly recommended by me from whom you can purchase those kits.

Power Output

The Bafang BBSHD 1000w generates significantly more torque than its smaller siblings, the controller can manage up to 30A of continuous current throughout the entire day, and the motor internals are significantly more rugged.

This Bafang mid-drive motor, like all of the others made by the company, has an internal cadence sensor and provides electric assistance based on the rate at which the rider is pedaling. You have a lot of control over the amount of power that is output from the pedal assist thanks to the fact that it has nine different power levels to choose from. The pedal assist is very responsive.

In the following table, the maximum power output that can be achieved by the 48v and 52v batteries is compared.

Bafang Motor Battery Peak Power
BBSHD 48v (54.4v) x 30A 1632w
BBSHD 52v (58.8v) x 30A 1764w

The operation of this motor is identical to that of the other Bafang kits; the rear wheel is driven directly through a single front chainring. When climbing a hill, choosing the appropriate gear is always important in order to maintain the highest possible level of motor efficiency. When climbing a very steep incline, using a high gear will place an unnecessary load on the controller, which increases the risk that it will fail before its time.

The installation process as well as compatibility

The Bafang BBS02 mid-drive kits are compatible with bicycles that have bottom brackets measuring between 33.5 and 33.5 millimeters in diameter and 68 to 73 millimeters in width. Given that these are typical measurements for bicycles, the kit will be an excellent match for the vast majority of bicycles. Your bicycle is required to have a bottom bracket that is removable, which means that the bottom bracket must be able to be unscrewed. Some bicycles, typically more expensive bicycles, have bottom brackets that are pressed into place and cannot be removed (easily). This kit cannot be installed on your bicycle if it has a bottom bracket similar to the one pictured here. If you are unsure whether or not your bottom bracket can be removed, you should ask at your neighborhood bike shop because they will be able to tell you just by looking at it. The following are some of the other requirements that your bike needs to fulfill, and they should be fairly self-explanatory:

  • It is recommended that the bike be chain driven (not belt driven)
  • It is recommended that you have disc brakes so that you can come to a stop quickly.
  • There should not be a chainguard on the bicycle.
  • Derailleur systems are preferred over IGH systems (derailleurs can handle more power)

Ride Quality

The ride quality provided by the Bafang BBS02 mid-drive motor is truly remarkable. A cadence sensor is what the pedal assist relies on to determine how much power to provide assistance with. This system functions very well, and in my opinion, it offers the best cadence-based pedal assist of any conversion kit on the market today. The motor can also be controlled using the thumb throttle that is provided. When you want to be the first person to leave the line at a traffic light, for example, this can be a very convenient thing to do. You will discover that the majority of the time, you will use the throttle in this manner: to provide you with that initial push when you want to accelerate from a position of standing still. Cycling becomes a lot less difficult as a result of this. However, given that the level of controllability isn't particularly refined, the throttle could be improved. Because it is mostly either going to go or not going, with not a lot of control in between, it makes it difficult to precisely control your bike using the throttle alone. However, when combined with the pedal assist, it becomes a feature that is not only extremely useful but also a lot of fun to have. You will have the very best of both worlds, which will result in a bike that is extremely adaptable to your needs.
